MOON GAZING HARE GIVEAWAY - SEE LOWER DOWN THE PAGE
What could be more beautiful and exciting than going for a moonlit walk and having the wonderful experience of seeing native nocturnal creatures going about their business or playing in the moonlight. Far better than seeing animals captive in a zoo where their behavior is never natural.
I have been very lucky to have spent time watching badgers feeding at dusk literally at my feet. This was very near a campsite in the Peak district and the badgers had become used to human presence and showed little fear of us. In fact they made great use of the campers and would rummage through the bins for leftovers and once even entered a tent to help themselves to a very tasty dinner of savory fried rice.
I have also seen rabbits, hedgehogs, bats, frogs, toads and owls at night but I have yet to see a moon gazing hare.
The hare has been a character of tales and mythology throughout history and can often be found depicted on ancient vases, jewellery, coins and other artifacts.
Pagans believe that to see a moon gazing hare would bring growth, re-birth, abundance, new-beginnings and good fortune. The hare is associated with the Goddess Eostre.
Medievel Christians changed the hare into a creature of ill omen and believed that witches took the form of hares at night and any injury inflicted upon the hare would appear on the witch when she returned to her human form in the morning. Hares sometimes gather in a group at night rather like a witches coven meeting in the moonlight.
The Easter bunny is an adaptation of the Hare of Eostre.

I am making a miniature moon gazing hare for a giveaway.
The hare will be less than 2cm tall and will be standing on a grassy base in front of a pool of water, above his head there will be a large moon that the hare will be gazing at.

Oh wow I so want to be in your draw. I just love moon gazing hares they hold such meaning. I wasn't following your blog, but I will be now as my other passion in life is creating miniature worlds via dolls houses. The night holds so many wonders. There are things that walk, lurk... scared under the exposure of the sun. But at night, they are swift and happy, ready to play. You are lucky indeed. I don't get to see a lot of night animals in NYC.
ReplyDeleteWe get a fair bit of nocturnal critters here, on the edge of suburbia and rural county. I've always liked the imagery of the moon gazing hare.
